Cambodia Vacation - Visiting Phnom Penh
If you are taking a
Cambodia vacation then it is likely that you will pass through Phnom Penh for a couple of days. There is plenty to keep you busy in the city for two or three days and a great choice of hotel s and places to eat and drink.
The city has a population of over one million and is situated on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers.
Influenced by the French, the Cambodians picked up the concept of European food and there are dozens of excellent restaurants throughout the city. Along the riverfront, you will find many French type bistros and cafes which are excellent places to relax and take it easy while watching the world go by. There are restaurants for every budget. In Phnom Penh you can find some of the finest restaurants in SE Asia.
Cambodian hotels come in every class in Phnom Penh. At the most simple, there are plenty of budget guesthouses to be found around Boueng Kak lake for a few dollars a night. As you move into the city, guesthouses become more expensive, but some of the smaller hotels still represent excellent value.
At the mid end of the scale there are many independent family run tourist and business hotels throughout the city. At the top end of the scale, the Le Royal is Cambodia’s landmark property, built in Art Deco French opulent colonial style.
Phnom Penh is situated just 7km from Phnom Penh International Airport and is a $9, 20 minute taxi ride away from the city centre.
Taxis, cyclos, tuk-tuks and motos (motorcycle taxis) can be found everywhere and getting around is easy. There is no bus system as such. Traffic in Phnom Penh is chaotic but not super congested.
Places to visit include the Royal Palace and National Museum, the Russian market (Toul Tom Poung), the New Market (Psar Tmei), Wat Phnom, the Killing Fields and Toul Sleng Genocide museum. If you are taking a Cambodia tour then it is likely that you will be taken to most of these places.
